My approach to lessons is founded in a patient, gentle and supportive method. My main goal with all students is that you develop a daily relationship with your instrument and an open musical mind. That may mean starting with 20 minutes of practice a day, focusing on fundamentals but also learning some of the music that inspired you to pick up the instrument in the first place. From there, the goal is for practice to naturally grow as your interest, skills and level of fun grow too. As we progress, your own personal goals and musical interests will remain a guiding influence on how we spend our time. However, I will also consistently introduce new ideas and styles to help broaden your understanding and perspective of music. For many of us, we start out thinking we want to master one facet of playing or a specific style of music. Yet as we develop, our ears open up to new possibilities and we often find ourselves immersed in musical pursuits that might not have been on our radar at the beginning.
Learning sound technique, the fundamentals of musical language and songs will all be important focuses in lessons. My hope with all students is that the further they go with the lessons, the more they also learn the skills necessary to self-educate so when they are interested in learning a song, they can eventually take that on themselves. Other important topics include ear training, improvisation, song writing, music theory, jamming with others and sight reading of all kinds. With beginner students, I usually start the process primarily by ear as I find this is the best way for them to get to the point where they are engaged in the actual making of music.
I've hosted various recitals and jams with students throughout the years and even helped start student bands. I believe the musical journey is full of insights that will benefit us in other areas of our lives. I find that what usually works best for us in music, will also work for us if we apply the same strategies to the rest of our lives. I also believe that playing music can help us improve our mental and physical health, connect us with others and enhance the sense of community we experience in our day to day lives.
You can read more about my teaching style by hearing directly from students in the Testimonials section and you can also check out my YouTube page where I have a variety of free lessons and performances to view.
I'm available for lessons via Zoom and Google Meet. For those local to Sandpoint, ID, I'm also available for in-person lessons. My rates are as follows:
Weekly 1/2 hour lesson - $30 (youth students only)
Weekly 1 hour lesson - $60
Bi-weekly 1 hour lesson - $75
4 lesson package to be used within a year - $320
Single 1 hour lesson - $100
Each lesson includes a 5-10 minute lesson review video which I send to student's as an unlisted YouTube link. The video will be a brief summary of what we covered in that day's lesson as well as me playing examples of what we worked on at very slow and then slightly faster speed so that you can know how things should be sounding as you practice.
